Bone Inlay Furniture

Bone inlay furniture is made by hand in India. Artisans carve small pieces of ethically sourced bone, set them into a pattern and fill the gaps with resin, so no two pieces are quite the same. A single piece is often enough to bring pattern and a handmade feel to a living room or bedroom.

Bone Inlay Furniture

Bone inlay is a craft with a long history in Rajasthan, and it’s still done the traditional way. Each fragment of bone is carved and laid by hand, then resin is filled in around it to complete the pattern. That handwork is why the design can vary slightly from one piece to the next. Our bone inlay is made from ethically sourced buffalo bone, and each shipment comes with Customs certification.

Because the pattern does so much of the work, one bone inlay piece is often enough to anchor a room. Pair it with plain timber, linen or a simple painted wall and let it be the piece people notice first.

Bone Inlay Coffee Tables

A coffee table sits right in the middle of the living room, which makes it the most visible way to use bone inlay. Round tables suit smaller rooms and make it easier to move around the sofa. Curved shapes give you a longer surface in front of a larger sofa. Keep the styling on top light. A tray, a couple of books and a vase is plenty, so the pattern doesn’t get lost. If you’re working out what size you need, our guide to choosing the right coffee table walks you through it.

Bone Inlay Side Tables

Not sure how much pattern you want in the room? Start with a side table. It’s small enough to move between the sofa, an armchair or a reading corner, and it’s an easy way to try the look before committing to a larger piece. Choose a colour that picks up something you already have, like a gold lamp base or a blue cushion. A bone inlay side table next to a plain coffee table, or the other way around, keeps things balanced. Our guide to using a coffee table and side table together has more ideas.

Bone Inlay Bedside Tables

A bedside table needs room for a lamp, a book and your phone. Look for drawers if you’d like to keep chargers and bits and pieces out of sight. Check the height against your mattress before you buy. The top should sit roughly level with the mattress, or a little higher, so it’s easy to reach from bed. A matching pair looks neat and symmetrical, but one bone inlay bedside with a simpler bedside table on the other side works well if your bedhead already has plenty going on.

Bone Inlay Chest of Drawers

A chest of drawers gives bone inlay the most surface to show off, and it can easily become the main feature of a bedroom or hallway. Give it a clear stretch of wall so it isn’t competing with too much around it. A mirror or a single print above is usually all it needs. Measure the depth as well as the width, and leave enough space in front to pull the drawers all the way out. If you’d prefer something plainer for the bedroom, browse our full range of chests of drawers and dressers.

The range also includes bone inlay sideboards, console tables and mirrors if you want to carry the pattern into the dining room or entry.
