How to Pick the Right Rug in the Sale

Start with the size

Measuring before the sale starts saves a lot of second-guessing later. In a living room, a rug that sits under at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs pulls the seating together into one area. In a bedroom, aim for enough rug on each side of the bed that your feet land on it when you get up. Under a dining table, the rug needs to be big enough for the chairs to stay on it when they’re pulled out.

Leaving a border of bare floor around the edge, roughly 20 to 30 cm, keeps the room looking balanced. If your space needs something generous, start with our large rugs. For a round dining table or a reading corner, round rugs are worth a look.

Think about how the room gets used

A rug in the family room or under the dining table has to cope with spills, crumbs and muddy paws. Washable rugs make a lot of sense there because they’re easy to keep fresh. Long, narrow spaces like hallways and galley kitchens suit hallway runners, and a door mat at the entry catches dirt before it travels through the house.

In bedrooms and quieter living spaces, softness underfoot matters more, so wool and plush rugs are a good place to start. Textured and natural fibre styles bring warmth to rooms with lots of hard floors.

Get ready before the sale

A little prep goes a long way. Measure the floor, mark the rug size out with masking tape to see how it sits with your furniture, and check any doors that need to open over it. Some of our washable designs come in rug, runner and door mat sizes, so you can carry one pattern from the front door through to the living room.
